I Am a Minority!

by Jean Biri

That’s an almost valid reason but a simple observation voids it. How come that in the United States of America for example, most immigrants who are mainly minorities start their own businesses?

Limitation is the mother of creativity. Most immigrants are discriminated against and cannot find employment. That’s a fact of life. While politicians will try to avoid that issue and even put measures to give everyone an equal chance, the practice is different.

With nothing to lose and to feed their families, some take matters into their own hands and start their own businesses.

Some parts of the world make it particularly difficult for immigrants to start their own business but where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Who says that business should be only done with the non-minority though? Don’t fellow members of the minority group eat, drink, wear clothes, and use the computer?

Madam C.J. Walker had two strikes against her in being an entrepreneur. She was a black woman. She’s said to be the first female (White or Black) self-made millionaire. She marketed beauty and hair products for black women.

As long as the business idea is sound, well packaged and marketed efficiently, it will take off no matter how much of a minority the entrepreneur behind the concept is.

What if an idea, really, really, really needs to be kick started by a non-minority?

Although, criticism may come raining at the entrepreneur’s head, he or she could hire employees or get partners who are part of the racial or ethnic majority. After all, the reverse situation does happen where companies targeting minorities employ members of the same ethnic or racial groups to better get acceptance.

Humans are prejudicial by nature including those from minorities.

Last point: the Internet is the equal opportunity platform.

Moral of the story? There will always be prejudice in one form or another. Those who accept that fact and adapt accordingly will thrive. Those who don’t will keep on dwelling on that excuse.

Sorry. being a “minority” is no excuse. What’s the next excuse?
