Divide and Conquer
I once heard a story of a head of state who sensing that he was bound to lose election from the opposition secretly met with three or four senior members of the contending party and led them to believe that they would be better off on their own.
Three of these members decided to form their own parties and instead of two candidates of the general elections, there were four.
When votes were tallied the head of state remained in power but numbers showed that had the opposing candidates remained united, they would have had a landslide victory.
Powerful strategy if you ask me!
