I first got wind of Crocs from a friend whose advice I’d asked regarding what flip flops to purchase for the summer. He told me that they were going to be big and that everyone was talking about them.
Needless to say, I never bought a pair because 1)they’re ugly 2)I sensed that everyone was going to be wearing them (I like to dress different).
Now this article at CNN Money asks if Crocs are fads.
It does not take a genius to answer a resounding “Yes!!!!”.
Crocs have all the characteristics of a fad:
- Explosive growth
- Media overexposure
- Ubiquity
- Mass marketed
- In the fashion industry which is all about fad after fad
- Various styles
In other words, very soon, the bubble will burst because once everyone sees everyone else wearing Crocs, no one will want to wear them. It’s like what happened to that Yellow Bracelet.
I predict by next summer (in 2007), Crocs will be passé and the company will be in trouble if it does not find another fad to ride or if it does not do something to turn the fad into a trend (Yes, you can quote me on this)…
How could Crocs avoid the fad fate? Do the opposite of all the points that I listed earlier… That’s if it’s not too late of course.
