“Nothing earthshaking”

by Jean Biri

That’s an expression that can be heard a lot in the business world. Folks fall into the trap of assuming that because the problem is so complex the answer has got to be way more than simple.

The typical marketing case study is Coke’s new Coke blunder. When they saw that the product was not selling they saw a very complex problem. Had Coke used conventional business thinking, they would have devised plans to make the new drink work on the marketplace no matter the costs (cos they have a lot of cash, mind you).

Instead they opted for a simple solution that save their business life: they withdrew the New Coke and brought back the real thing code name Classic Coke.

Business strategy needs to be simple and obvious. Executing it might be complex but imagine trying to execute a complex idea in a complex manner….
